How to Clean a Mattress Effectively

How to Clean a Mattress Effectively

Even the best, highest-quality model bought from a mattress store in Almaty will last eight to ten years. If you never clean the surface you sleep on, that life span drops several times over. Here is how to clean a mattress at home quickly, and get rid of any smells and stains.

A bed needs cleaning twice a year, whatever it is made of. A thorough clean takes up to 24 hours, drying in the sun included. Strip your orthopedic mattress bought in Almaty completely (the model itself makes no difference) and wash the sheets. That includes the mattress protector and any covers.

Fit the upholstery attachment to your vacuum cleaner, switch it to the appropriate setting and vacuum the top and the sides. This gets rid of any dust mites. The usual turbo brush you run over carpets is no help when you want to clean a mattress quickly, and it can damage the surface.

Drool and sweat are the main culprits behind stains. You can treat them with a suitable stain remover, an enzyme cleaner for instance, but check the back of the bottle and make sure the product you have picked is safe to use on bedding. A little mild dish soap in a cup of water also goes a long way towards cleaning a mattress effectively.

Keeping it dry matters, especially with a foam mattress. Spray or apply the cleaner directly onto the stain and blot gently. Do not press it into the material and do not let the moisture sit. Repeat until the stain is gone.

If ordinary products will not shift the mark, mix bicarbonate of soda with cold water into a paste, spread it over the affected area and leave it for 30 minutes. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and repeat if needed.

Do not skip the disinfecting step. It takes care of any lingering smells. First, try taking the mattress outside into direct sunlight, or setting it beside a large window that lets the light through. It is optional, but ultraviolet light will disinfect the material.

Sprinkle the surface generously with bicarbonate of soda and leave it for a while, ideally 24 hours for the best result. Remember to bring it back inside as soon as the sun starts to set.

The main steps of cleaning a mattress are done at this point, but do vacuum it once more to draw out the remaining soda, then put on a freshly washed mattress protector and clean sheets.
