How to clean a mattress at home

Comfortable, healthy sleep takes more than a bed that feels good — it also has to be clean. Professional dry cleaning at a specialist salon is not within everyone's reach, so more and more people are cleaning the mattress themselves. Here are a few tips that make the job far more effective.
Dealing with dust and dirt
Dust is where dust mites happily live and breed. Once those insects settle into your bed they trigger allergic reactions, which are hard on children and older people alike. That is exactly why a mattress needs regular cleaning, whatever the source of the dirt.
A removable cover makes the whole procedure far simpler. Take the mattress protector off, shake it out thoroughly and wash it with a powder or gel meant for delicate fabrics.
If there is no such cover, spread a damp cotton or linen sheet over the mattress and beat it thoroughly. All the dust settles into the cloth; take it away, then vacuum the mattress and let it dry properly. Do this once every few months, since mattress prices mean buying a new one often is simply not realistic.
Removing stains
To get the best possible results, keep these rules in mind:
· never rub the stain;
· do not use more water or cleaning product than the instructions allow;
· dry the mattress out thoroughly.
Washing soda does a good job on a mattress. Half a teaspoon per litre of water is plenty. Once the solution is mixed, cover the affected area with it and blot up the excess moisture with a paper towel. Apply it with a cloth or a napkin rather than pouring it on.
If the stain has soaked in deeply, you will need to repeat the process at least three times with short breaks in between. Organic stain removers sold in specialist shops work well too.
The material the mattress itself is made of matters just as much here. With a well-made product, routine care is never a problem.
