What can you put on a mattress to make it firmer?

Orthopedic mattresses do not always turn out as firm as you expected. There is no need to be upset about it, because there are several ideas for what to put on a mattress to firm it up and improve the situation.

What to put on  a mattress to make it firmer?

Everyone has their own “right” firmness. Firm beds are essential for babies, teenagers, athletes and anyone weighing more than 90 kg. But the mattress you buy does not always turn out to be firm.

You can make a bed firmer with special mattress protectors or overlays. Let us look at each of these methods in more detail.

A mattress protector is a special cover that slips over the mattress and shields it from dirt. This option helps if you only need to raise the firmness a little, since a protector is thin.

Overlays (toppers) are extra thin mattresses that go on top of the main one and fasten with clips, snaps or straps. They can be filled with hollow fiber, bi-coconut or coconut coir. The last of these is the most popular filling and has a number of advantages:

  • it is natural;
  • it is durable;
  • it improves orthopedic properties;
  • it has an antibacterial effect.

The topper itself can be cotton or cotton jacquard, and if you ever want to, the mattress's original firmness comes back the moment you take the overlay off.

Any mattress store stocks toppers and protectors in every mattress size.

What can you put on a mattress for firmness: do-it-yourself options?

If you would rather not buy a protector separately, there are a few ways to add firmness yourself.

Start by inspecting the mattress: many of them have several layers that can be swapped around. If the fillings can be rearranged, put the coconut coir on top and the soft foam underneath. This method costs nothing at all, but it does not work with every bed.

So what can you put on a mattress for firmness if the layers cannot be moved? Buy or find a cover and some foam rubber. Then decide on the thickness and firmness you want and fill the cover with the foam. The minimum thickness of the foam is 10 mm, and the thicker it is, the firmer the mattress. Instead of foam rubber you can buy coconut coir, which is a longer-lasting material.

Best of all, though, is to try the products out before you buy a mattress, if you get the chance.
