Which Mattress to Choose for Adults?

Which Mattress to Choose for Adults?

Every adult sets up comfortable conditions for sleep so they can function through the day, and often all it takes is the right mattress. Not everyone knows which mattress is best for an adult, so let us go through it.

Which mattress to choose for adults: what to look at

Start with firmness. Medium-firm mattresses are the best option for most people, but it always comes down to the individual. Extra-firm orthopedic mattresses, for instance, suit people with spinal problems, while soft ones are better for older sleepers.

  1. Body weight: to work out which mattress an adult needs, start from weight. It determines how long the mattress lasts and how firm it should be. Every mattress has a maximum weight rating that is best not exceeded. On top of that, a heavier person will find a medium-firm mattress soft, while a light one (under 50 kg) will find the same mattress very firm.
  2. Height - anything under 14 cm is not right for an adult. The ideal range is 14 to 30 cm. For a springless mattress that means 14-16 cm and up; for a spring model, 18-19 cm minimum.  The most premium models stand 24 to 40 cm tall.
  3. Size - when it comes to choosing a mattress for adults, size matters. A mattress bigger than the bed will hang over the edge and you will not sleep well. It is best to buy the mattress and the bed at the same time.

There is no point picking one mattress for the whole family - a child's body is different from an adult's, so it is better to set up a separate sleeping place for the child.

Spring or springless: what kind of mattress should an adult sleep on?

The difference between mattresses is whether there are springs inside.  All spring mattresses come in two kinds:

  • Bonnel - a model with a steel spring frame: springy and wear-resistant, but not really orthopedic;
  • Pocket Spring - the springs sit in units that work independently of each other, which suits couples of different weights, but the price is high.

Spring mattresses stand up to load, come in the height and firmness you need, and let air through well. Cleaning the springs, though, means sending the mattress to a dry cleaner.

Springless mattresses differ from each other in their filling. It can be latex, coconut coir, memory foam or polyurethane foam. Every springless model has a long service life, makes no noise under load, and delivers a pronounced orthopedic effect.

To work out what kind of mattress an adult should sleep on, it is best to visit a mattress store and look at both options.
