Why bed mattresses are so expensive

There are several reasons for the high price. Every mattress shop sets its own, depending on the complexity of logistics, the contracts signed with manufacturers (or production costs, if the shop runs its own factory) and brand recognition. 

Price is also largely driven by the materials. How hypoallergenic and natural they are, how well they resist moisture, mould and pests - it all counts. Quality materials such as natural latex and coconut coir cost more. They are harder to source and often need pricier storage, processing and transport.

Size matters too. An expensive bed mattress usually has many layers, is bulkier and taller than budget models, and takes more weight.

Other reasons:

• a longer service life (10 years minimum), wear resistance and firmness;
• an expensive mattress comes with extra features - self-regulating temperature, zoned support for different parts of the body, motion isolation;
• double models cost more.
