How to Make a Mattress Softer

How to Make a Mattress Softer

Over time you may need to change how soft your mattress is. Whether you want it softer or firmer does not make much difference. Depending on what you want or what you need, it is worth knowing how to make a mattress softer.

Which mattress is better

Whether a firm or a soft mattress is better comes down to personal preference and to any recommendations you have been given. If you have lost a lot of weight since you bought your mattress, you will most likely need a softer one. If it is the other way round, you need a firmer one.

Firm and soft mattresses are equally good in different situations. If you do not want to replace your mattress but it was too firm for you from the start, a fair question comes up: "Will a firm mattress get softer over time?" That depends on the materials the mattress is made of. To find out whether yours can take that kind of change, ask a consultant when you buy it in store, or look up information about the material online.

How to change the firmness

The firmness of a mattress you have already bought is changed with a topper. This is a thin extra mattress, usually 4 to 10 cm thick, that goes on top of the one you have. To adjust the firmness, you pick the level you need in the topper itself. To make the bed softer you will most likely want a soft or medium-soft topper. To do the opposite and make it firmer, buy a firm or medium-firm one.

A mattress protector can also be used to fine-tune firmness. This is a cover that goes over an ordinary mattress. Manufacturers do not state a firmness level for these, so they are simply either soft or firm. Specialists do not recommend that heavier people use a protector to soften a firm mattress.
