How to Sew a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper is an important part of any bed. It keeps moisture, dust and dirt off the mattress. Toppers are held in place by elastic straps or a zip. You can buy one ready-made or sew it yourself.

What you can make on your own is a cover-style topper or a pad, because proper toppers are made from more complex materials and their production needs extra tools and even machinery.

For the cover you can use either synthetic or natural fabric. Both are easy to look after and to wash, and with regular cleaning the item will last a long time.

Waterproof mattress protectors call for terry fabric. Quilted ones can be made from polyester padding, wool or fleece. For warm weather, choose silk.

The steps:

● measure the width and length of the mattress, draw a paper pattern and prepare the pieces;

● stack the pieces of a multi-layer topper in the right order;

● prepare elastic straps of the right width;

● pin the straps to the corners of the topper;

● finish the edges;

● stitch on the tape.

Keep in mind that the width of the elastic depends on the size of your mattress: the taller the mattress, the wider the elastic should be.

Multi-layer toppers hold their shape better, protect better, do not bunch up and last a long time. If you are working with smooth fabrics such as silk, be extra careful, because the fabric is more delicate. Bedding also tends to slide on materials like this, which is worth taking into account when you make your topper.
