How to Choose a Mattress for a Newborn's Cot

Getting the sleeping space ready is the most important part of preparing for a new baby in the family. Once the cot is in the house, it is time to look for the right mattress, because the sleeping surface is what underpins a child's health and posture.

What to look for in a baby mattress

When you are choosing a mattress for a newborn, every parameter counts.

  1. Price. Start by working out what you are prepared to spend and settle on a price range. As a rule, you can budget anywhere from 1500 to 3500 hryvnia for an orthopedic sleeping mattress for a baby's cot.
  2. Brand. The manufacturer matters just as much. The range on sale is wide and includes both domestic and foreign brands. You will find the full list of manufacturers on our site.
  3. Size. This is the key parameter of them all, which is why it makes sense to buy the cot first and work from its dimensions. Manufacturers offer a great many sizes: 60x120, 70x140, 180x80 and so on.
  4. Filling. Besides the type of filling, you will need to decide how many layers you want. Fillings can be natural or synthetic. Different models come with a different number of layers, and some can be used on either side. Thickness matters too, and it depends on the type of cot, the height of the base and the position it is set to.
  5. Shape. Most models are made in the classic rectangular shape. These days, though, there are plenty of oval, round and square cots on the market, and you can buy mattresses for those as well.

To make the right choice, take the child's age into account. As babies grow and develop, each stage calls for a sleeping surface of a different firmness.

How to care for a mattress

Once you have bought a baby mattress, get a good waterproof mattress protector too, one that will hold back stains and moisture. As a rule they come with elastic corner straps, which makes them easier to use.

If there is no protector and a stain does end up on the surface, use ordinary wipes to remove it. Only spot cleaning is possible; washing the whole mattress is not recommended.
