Using a pressure-relief mattress: the essential rules

Pressure-relief mattresses are the only real answer for people whose health rules out physical activity. Using them involves a few particular points that are worth knowing so that you do not damage the mattress.

How to position it on the bed

The set includes special hoses for connecting to the compressor. Connect them and place the unit anywhere convenient, not far from the patient's bed.

A pressure-relief mattress goes on the patient's bed on top of the ordinary mattress that is already in place. It is then covered with a sheet, or with a special absorbent pad if the system has no air-flow function.

How the mattress is positioned matters a great deal for the way it works. The air cells must face upwards so that the connecting tubes do not run past the lower edge of the sleeping area. As you connect it, check that every part is intact, untangle the tubes and pull them out from under the mattress if they ended up there during setup.

Set aside time to test the device before the patient is placed on the bed, so you know it is working properly. The system only does its job if the compressor runs constantly and without interruption, changing the air in the chambers.

Checking the pressure

Pressure-relief therapy only works if every cell is at the right pressure. The patient's weight affects that figure – the lighter the patient, the less pressure is needed for the system to work correctly.

A mattress like this is firm enough to support the patient, yet soft enough to rule out peak pressure points.

To check the current level, simply slide a few fingers between the ordinary mattress and the pressure-relief mattress. If everything is working properly, they should go in freely. If they do not, the unit needs adjusting.

Disinfecting the mattress

Before cleaning it, inflate the mattress fully. Use a soft cloth and soapy water. Never use products that contain alcohol or dyes. While it dries, the surface should be exposed to sunlight.
