Why the Right Pillow Matters So Much for Healthy Sleep

Why the Right Pillow Matters So Much for Healthy Sleep

Sound sleep is fundamental to overall wellbeing. Yet when people think about what shapes the quality of their sleep, mattresses and bedding get all the attention, and the role a pillow plays in healthy sleep is quietly overlooked.

What a pillow actually does for healthy sleep

A pillow’s job is to support the head and neck correctly through the night. The right pillow keeps the cervical spine in a neutral position, which helps prevent neck and back pain. A pillow that sits too high or too low puts the muscles under strain and brings on aches.

A good hypoallergenic pillow also helps prevent allergic reactions. Dust mites and other allergens build up in ordinary pillows and can leave you with a blocked nose, sneezing and coughing. Hypoallergenic pillows are made from materials that stop allergens from multiplying, which makes for healthier sleep.

When your head and neck are properly aligned during sleep, rest becomes deeper and more restorative. You wake up refreshed and alert, ready for the day ahead.

Poor sleep sets off a string of serious health problems:

  • memory problems;
  • reduced concentration
  • headaches

All of it takes a heavy toll on quality of life, making it harder to work and harder to rest.

How to choose a pillow

If you are planning to buy a pillow, start by deciding on the type. Pillows come in the following kinds:

  • polyurethane foam;
  • down;
  • orthopedic.

There is no universal answer to the question of which pillow is best for healthy sleep. The choice comes down to your own preferences and the particulars of your body. If you suffer from allergies or neck pain, it is worth consulting an orthopedic specialist before you buy.

Pay attention to the manufacturer, too, when you visit a mattress store. Buy from established makers who back their products with a warranty. Many stores will let you exchange an item during the warranty period if the pillow turns out not to suit you.

Sleeping on the same pillow year after year is not a good idea. Most specialists recommend replacing it every two years, and every four at the very most.
